Core Values. They Are Non-Negotiable… Period.

This is the Monday Mindset Newsletter that was sent on Monday 1/23/2022…

Good morning,

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that being authentic and real is very important to me. I am someone who puts far greater value on authenticity than I do most other things.

To me, being authentic is paramount.

So with that said, I am going to be completely authentic with you this morning. And perhaps you will have some words of wisdom for me… If you do, hit the reply button and let me know your thoughts.

In recent months, I’ve been part of some business negotiations that have resulted in some relationships lost with people I really cared for. A few weeks ago, the stress of the entire circumstance sent me to the ER to get checked out because my resting heart rate was over 110 bpm for about a week straight.

After an EKG, chest x-ray, and bloodwork, the ER doc said he couldn’t find anything physically wrong with me and suggested I try and reduce whatever was stressing me out…

Happy to hear that I wasn’t having a heart attack or some other cardiac-related issue, I thanked the doc and said I would do my best.

Without getting into the details of the stress, the issue is about a signed agreement one of my companies has with a partner company that when the rubber met the road, they chose not to honor their side of the deal. It was a very clear integrity violation. And rather than those violations being admitted to, apologized for, and resolved, they persisted and became worse.

Now both our legal teams are involved.

And while everything is being handled civilly between us, the meaningful personal relationship we once had, has dissolved. And that breaks my heart.

But here is the point of me telling you all this…

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ve heard me speak a lot about Core Values. You’ve heard me on a variety of podcasts being interviewed about them. And you’ve heard me say that they are Non-Negotiable.

Well, I’m proud to say that I held firm to my Core Values and didn’t negotiate them away. But I am also mourning the loss of some people I once really held in high regard and enjoyed their friendships very much.

So here is my ask of you today… If you make a promise, keep it. And if others ever try and get you to compromise your Core Values, don’t. Sometimes there is a hefty price to pay when doing the right thing. But punch that ticket because the right thing is always the right thing.

I appreciate you letting me be authentic and share with you something that’s weighing on me today.

Go forth and conquer,

Matt

P.S. If you’ve ever lost a relationship by standing firm on doing what was right, hit reply and let me know how it shook out. Did you ever reconcile the relationship, or was the chapter closed out for good?
